Visiting Egypt in Summer: Is It Too Hot?
Travel Tips · 6 min read · Published 2025-09-05
Summer in Egypt is hot, no question. But with the right plan, it can be a great-value time to visit.
Let's be honest: summer in Egypt is hot, especially in the south. But plenty of people visit between June and August and have a great trip, often at lower prices and with thinner crowds at the big sights. Here's how to do summer well.
How hot are we talking
Cairo gets hot, and Luxor and Aswan can be very hot indeed, sometimes well above 40C in midday. The heat is dry rather than humid, which helps, but it's not to be underestimated.
The summer strategy
Start early and rest in the afternoon. Visit the Pyramids and temples first thing when it's coolest, retreat to air-conditioning or a pool in the heat of the day, and come back out in the evening. Hydrate constantly, wear a hat and light clothing, and don't try to power through the midday sun.
Head to the coast
Summer is prime time for the Red Sea, where sea breezes make the heat far more bearable and the water is glorious. Pairing a few culture days with a Red Sea stay is the smart summer shape. See our Wonders of Egypt & Red Sea trip.
The upsides
Fewer crowds at the headline sites and better value on hotels and cruises are real perks of off-season travel. If you can handle early starts and afternoon downtime, summer has genuine advantages.
The bottom line
Summer isn't the most comfortable season, but it's far from impossible, and a well-paced private trip makes all the difference. For the full month-by-month picture, see our best time to visit guide.
