Getting Around Egypt: Flights, Trains and Transport

Travel Tips · 6 min read · Published 2025-05-30

Domestic flights, sleeper trains, private drivers. Here's how to move around Egypt efficiently and comfortably.

Egypt is a big country and the main sights are spread out, so how you move between them matters. Here's a clear rundown of the options and what we recommend.

Domestic flights For covering the long distances, flying is the easiest choice. Quick flights link Cairo with Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea, turning what would be very long drives into an hour in the air. For most visitors, domestic flights are the backbone of an efficient trip.

The Nile, as transport Between Luxor and Aswan, the most enjoyable way to travel is the Nile itself. A cruise carries you from temple to temple while you relax on deck, doubling as both transport and a highlight. See our honest take on Nile cruises.

The sleeper train The overnight sleeper train between Cairo and Luxor or Aswan is a characterful option that saves a night's hotel. It's comfortable enough and a fun experience, though slower and less flexible than flying.

Private car and driver Within and around cities, a private car with a driver is by far the most comfortable way to get around, especially given Cairo's famously heavy traffic. It keeps you cool, saves time, and lets you set your own pace. This is how our guests travel throughout.

What we'd skip Self-driving isn't recommended for most visitors given the traffic and road style, and public city buses are tricky without local knowledge. Ride-hailing apps work in Cairo, but a private driver is far smoother for sightseeing days.
