A Day Trip to Alexandria From Cairo: Is It Worth It?
The Mediterranean city of Alexandria is a different side of Egypt. Here's whether to make the trip, and what to see.
Alexandria feels like a different country to the rest of Egypt. Founded by Alexander the Great, it's a faded, salty Mediterranean city of sea breezes, old cafes and Greco-Roman history rather than pharaonic temples. The question is whether it's worth a day of your trip.
The honest answer If you have at least five or six days in Egypt and you like cities with character, yes. If you're on a tight three or four day trip, your time is probably better spent on the Pyramids and the Nile. Alexandria is a lovely contrast, not a must-see headline.
The drive It's roughly three hours each way from Cairo, so a day trip is a long but doable day. Leaving early makes all the difference. Many travellers prefer to stay a night to slow it down.
What to see The seafront Qaitbay Citadel sits where the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood, one of the original Seven Wonders. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a striking nod to the legendary ancient library. Add the Roman amphitheatre, the eerie Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, and a seafood lunch on the corniche.
The vibe What people remember is the atmosphere: the long curving bay, the old trams, the European-influenced architecture, and the gentler pace. It's less about ticking off monuments and more about wandering.
