Giza, Saqqara & Dahshur: Which Pyramids Should You Visit?
Egypt has far more pyramids than just Giza. Here's how Saqqara and Dahshur compare, and how to fit them in.
Most people picture Giza when they think of the pyramids, but the story of pyramid-building actually unfolds across several sites south of Cairo. Visiting more than one turns a famous photo stop into a real understanding of how these monuments evolved.
Giza: the icons The three great pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are the ones everyone comes for, and rightly so. This is the most visited site in Egypt, busy but unmissable, and the new Grand Egyptian Museum sits right beside it. If you see only one pyramid site, it is this one. Our Cairo Quick Getaway covers it.
Saqqara: where it began Saqqara is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, Egypt's oldest large stone monument and the prototype for everything that followed. It is an enormous, atmospheric necropolis with beautifully decorated tombs, and far fewer crowds than Giza. For history lovers, it is often the most memorable stop.
Dahshur: the perfect pyramids A little further south, Dahshur holds the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, the first true smooth-sided pyramids, and the crucial step between Saqqara and Giza. It is usually quiet, and you can often enter with hardly anyone else around.
How to see them Saqqara, Memphis (the ancient capital), and Dahshur combine beautifully into one private day tour, and it pairs naturally with a separate Giza day. Together they tell the full arc of the pyramid age in a way Giza alone cannot. Our tours can include all of them.
Which should you choose? Short on time? Do Giza. Want the deeper story and far fewer crowds? Add Saqqara and Dahshur. With a private Egyptologist, the connection between the sites is what makes it click.
