Siwa Oasis: Egypt's Far-Flung Desert Escape
Destinations · 6 min read · Published 2026-03-22
Remote, palm-fringed and utterly different, Siwa is for travellers who want Egypt off the usual track.
Siwa is about as far from the tour-bus Egypt as you can get. Tucked deep in the Western Desert near the Libyan border, this palm-filled oasis has its own Berber culture, its own language, and a slow, dreamy atmosphere that feels worlds away from Cairo.
Why go
Siwa is for travellers who've perhaps seen the headline sights and want something quieter and stranger. Think mirror-flat salt lakes you can float in, freshwater springs, ancient mud-brick ruins, and dunes that stretch to the horizon. It's beautiful, remote and genuinely different.
What to see and do
Float in the bright blue salt pools, watch the sunset from the ruined Shali fortress in the old town, and visit the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, famously consulted by Alexander the Great. A desert safari into the Great Sand Sea, with sandboarding and a night under the stars, is the highlight for many.
Getting there
This is the catch: Siwa is remote. It's a long drive from Cairo or from the coast at Marsa Matruh, so it suits travellers with time who want to slow down rather than those on a tight first-timer schedule.
Who it's for
If it's your first trip and you have a week, stick to the Pyramids and the Nile. If you're returning, or you have longer and crave somewhere truly off the track, Siwa is a magical add-on.
How to do it
Because of the distances, going with an operator who handles the logistics and a desert guide makes all the difference. Tell us if a Siwa extension appeals and we'll see how it fits your dates. In the meantime, browse our Egypt tours for the classic routes.
