Egypt SIM Cards and Internet: Staying Connected

Travel Tips · 5 min read · Published 2025-11-20

Cheap data, easy SIM cards and decent coverage. Here's how to get online in Egypt without the hassle.

Staying connected in Egypt is easy and cheap. Data is inexpensive, coverage in the tourist areas is good, and getting set up takes minutes. Here are your options.

Local SIM cards The simplest route for most visitors is a local prepaid SIM from one of the main networks: Vodafone, Orange or Etisalat. You can buy one at the airport on arrival or at any network shop in town. Bring your passport, as it's required to register the SIM. A tourist data bundle costs very little for plenty of gigabytes.

eSIMs If your phone supports an eSIM, a travel eSIM is a tidy alternative: you set it up before you arrive and skip the shop entirely. It's slightly pricier than a local SIM but very convenient.

Coverage and speed Across Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resorts, coverage and 4G speeds are perfectly good for maps, messaging and uploads. Out in the deep desert, expect patchy or no signal, which is part of the charm.

Wi-Fi Hotels and Nile cruisers usually offer Wi-Fi, though speeds on the boats can be slower as you sail. For reliable data on the move, a local SIM or eSIM is the better bet.

A practical tip Keep your phone charged with a power bank on long sightseeing days, and download offline maps as a backup. On our trips, your guide is always reachable, so you're never out of contact when it matters. Browse our tours to start planning.
