What to Pack for Egypt, From People Who Live Here

Travel Tips · 6 min read · Published 2026-02-22

A no-nonsense packing list for Egypt that covers the heat, the sites, the dress code and the things people always forget.

Packing for Egypt isn't complicated once you know the two things that shape it: it's hot and sunny most of the year, and the sites are more conservative than the beach. Here's what we actually tell our guests to bring.

Clothes that breathe and cover Light, loose cotton and linen are your friends. They keep you cool and they let you cover shoulders and knees at temples and mosques without overheating. A scarf or shawl is the most useful single item you can pack: sun cover, modesty cover at religious sites, and a layer for chilly evenings on a Nile cruise.

For the feet You'll walk on sand, uneven temple stone and dusty paths, so closed, comfortable shoes win every day. Bring sandals too for the hotel and the boat, but don't plan to do the Pyramids in flip-flops.

Sun protection, seriously The Egyptian sun is stronger than people expect, especially in Upper Egypt. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, proper sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen. If you're diving or snorkelling the Red Sea, bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral.

The things people forget A refillable water bottle (stay ahead of the heat), a small stack of cash in small notes for tips, a power bank for long sightseeing days, hand sanitiser, and any personal medications in their original packaging. A light cardigan helps on cold cruise mornings and over-air-conditioned restaurants.

What you can leave at home You don't need heavy clothing for most of the year, and you don't need to overthink "smart" outfits; Egypt is relaxed. In winter (December to February), pack a warmer layer for the evenings, particularly in the desert and on the water.

A note on the dress code Nobody expects you to cover head to toe, and the resorts are easygoing. For everywhere else, aiming for shoulders and knees covered keeps you comfortable and respectful.
