Egypt in 7 Days: A Realistic Itinerary
One week, done right: the Pyramids, a Nile cruise and the great temples, without trying to cram in too much.
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Egypt. It's long enough to see the Pyramids and sail the Nile properly, and short enough to fit a normal holiday. Here's how we'd shape it.
Days 1 to 2: Cairo and Giza Land in Cairo and give yourself a full day at the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum next door. If you arrive with energy to spare, an evening Nile dinner cruise is a gentle way to start. Keep the pace easy on day one; jet lag is real.
Day 3: Old Cairo, then south Spend the morning in Coptic and Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, then take an afternoon flight to Aswan or Luxor to begin the cruise portion. Flying saves you a long drive and a wasted day.
Days 4 to 6: the Nile cruise This is the heart of the trip. Sailing between Aswan and Luxor, you visit Philae, Kom Ombo and Edfu, then Karnak, Luxor Temple and the Valley of the Kings. The boat carries you from one temple to the next while you relax on deck in between. For how the routes and boats differ, see our Nile cruise guide.
Day 7: home Fly back to Cairo for your departure. If your flight is late, squeeze in any Cairo sight you missed.
A few honest tips Don't try to add Abu Simbel, the Red Sea and Alexandria into the same week; you'll spend it in transit. Pick the classic Cairo-plus-Nile shape and do it well. If you have more time, our guide on how many days you need shows what extra days buy you.
