Nile Cruise Guide: Routes, Boats, and the Best Time to Sail
Everything you need to choose the right Nile cruise, from Luxor-Aswan routes to cruisers versus dahabiyas and when to go.
A Nile cruise is the heart of most great Egypt trips. Sailing between Luxor and Aswan, you reach a string of spectacular temples the way travellers have for thousands of years, with your hotel floating along beside you. Here is how to choose the right one.
The standard route: Luxor to Aswan (or reverse) Almost every Nile cruise runs the stretch between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at the great temples along the way: Karnak and Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings on Luxor's West Bank, Edfu's Temple of Horus, and Kom Ombo. In Aswan you reach Philae Temple and the gateway to Abu Simbel. Most cruises last three or four nights, which is the ideal pairing with a few days in Cairo.
Cruiser or dahabiya? A 5-star Nile cruiser is the classic choice: spacious cabins, a sun deck with a pool, full-board dining, and a comfortable, social atmosphere. A dahabiya is a smaller, boutique sailing boat with only a handful of cabins, perfect if you want intimacy, quiet, and stops at islands the big boats skip. Our private Dahabiya odyssey is the slow-travel version of the Nile.
When is the best time to sail? October to April brings the most comfortable temperatures in Upper Egypt, with warm, dry days ideal for temple visits. The summer months are very hot in Luxor and Aswan, though cruises run year-round and the boats are fully air-conditioned. If you can choose, the cooler season makes the daytime sightseeing far more pleasant.
What is usually included On our cruises, full board, a private Egyptologist for your excursions, and all the temple visits along the route are arranged for you. Most also pair with domestic flights to and from Cairo so you never lose a day to long drives.
Pairing it with the rest of Egypt A Nile cruise is best experienced as part of a fuller trip. The most popular shape is Cairo and the Pyramids first, then fly south for the cruise.
