Nubia: The Ancient Black African Kingdom Beside Egypt
History · 7 min read · Published 2025-12-18
South of Egypt lay Nubia, a great Black civilization of gold, pyramids and powerful queens. Here's its story, and how to experience it today.
Just south of Egypt, along the same life-giving Nile, lay Nubia, the home of one of Africa's greatest ancient civilizations. Too often overshadowed by its northern neighbor, Nubia was a powerhouse in its own right, and its culture is still alive today around Aswan. Here's why it deserves your attention.
A civilization of gold and power
The Nubian kingdom of Kush controlled the trade routes that carried gold, ivory and exotic goods between the heart of Africa and the Mediterranean world. The very name Nubia may come from the ancient word for gold. At times Kush rivaled Egypt; at others it ruled it outright, as we cover in our story of the Black pharaohs.
Pyramids and queens
The Nubians built their own distinctive, steep pyramids, hundreds of them, at sites like Meroe in modern Sudan. Nubia was also notable for its powerful queens, the Kandakes or Candaces, who ruled as warriors and heads of state, a striking image of African women in power thousands of years ago.
Living Nubian culture today
This isn't only ancient history. The Nubian people still live along the Nile around Aswan, in brightly painted villages full of color, music and warmth. Visiting a Nubian village, sharing tea and hearing the language and traditions, is one of the most heartfelt experiences in Egypt, and a highlight for many of our guests.
Where to experience it
Aswan is the gateway to all of this: the Nubian Museum, the riverside villages, and nearby monuments like Philae and Abu Simbel that sit in historic Nubian land. See our two days in Aswan guide for how to spend your time.
