How to Avoid the Crowds at the Pyramids

The Pyramids can be packed by mid-morning. A few simple choices give you the plateau almost to yourself.

The Pyramids of Giza are the most visited place in Egypt, and by late morning the plateau is busy with tour buses. The good news is that a few simple choices can give you a far quieter, calmer visit.

Go at opening time This is the single best tip. Arrive right when the site opens, before the big group tours roll in and before the midday heat. The light is beautiful, the temperatures are kind, and you'll get your photos without a crowd in every frame.

Head to the panorama point Most groups cluster around the entrance and the largest pyramid. Drive out to the desert panorama point, where you can see all three pyramids lined up, and you'll often have space and quiet. It's also the best spot for that classic photo.

Consider the shoulder seasons The site is busiest in the peak winter months. Visiting in the shoulder seasons, while still comfortable, means thinner crowds. Whenever you go, early in the day always beats the afternoon.

Skip the hassle, not just the crowds Crowds aren't the only thing that can take the shine off Giza; persistent sellers and unofficial guides do too. A private Egyptologist and driver handle all of that, so you're free to simply take it in. It's the difference between enduring the Pyramids and enjoying them.

A quieter alternative nearby If you love the idea of pyramids without the crowds entirely, add Saqqara and Dahshur to the south, which are often beautifully quiet. We compare them in our guide to which pyramids to visit.
