Why Egypt Belongs on Every Black Traveler's Bucket List
From the Pyramids to the Nubian villages of Aswan, here's why Egypt has become a rite of passage for Black travelers.
Scroll through Black travel groups online and you'll see Egypt again and again. It has quietly become a rite of passage, and for good reason. This is a country that rewards the curiosity, the pride and the joy that travelers bring to it. Here's why it earns its place at the top of the list.
Standing in the Motherland Egypt is part of Africa, and for many Black travelers that geography is the whole point. To stand before monuments built by an African civilization thousands of years ago is to feel a thread connecting you to the continent and to a shared human story that began here. People often describe the feeling as a homecoming.
A civilization of brilliance Ancient Egypt was a society of astonishing achievement in art, architecture, science and writing, at a time when much of the world was far less developed. Walking through it is a powerful counter to anyone who ever taught you a smaller version of history. It's affirming in the deepest sense.
The connection to Nubia Egypt's story doesn't end at its southern border. The kingdom of Nubia, a great Black African civilization, traded, fought, intermarried with and even ruled Egypt. In Aswan you can still visit living Nubian villages and feel that culture today. We dig into this in our guide to Nubia.
Joy, community and the photos Part of the magic is simply how good it feels to experience all this together. The group photos at the Pyramids, the felucca rides at sunset, the celebration of being there: this is travel as community. Our own travelers, pictured across this site, capture exactly that energy.
